Video endoscopes complement older, rigid endoscopes and borescopes well because they can be easily connected. Most video scopes are fitted with a “coupler” that easily attaches to most standard endoscopes. The camera can be readily set up and connected to the coupler that includes a 12-volt power adapter. Video endoscopy systems allow doctors, medical workers and technical experts to look inside of many different organs in the human body, as well as allowing for cost-effective, non-destructive material-testing and maintenance in industrial situations.

Most video endoscopy systems typically include 4 external components. The following is a list of each respective function, noted precautions, and tips for keeping the video endoscope running properly and effectively:

• The light-guide plug fits right into the light source. The air/water and suction channels have ports in the light guide plug. These light-guide plugs are heavier than that of non-video endoscopes and must be handled with care. Note: The terminals on this video component are not waterproof and must be covered by the cap prior to cleaning.
• The umbilical cable/universal cord connects the light guide to the control head of the endoscope. Note: Splashes or hand contact during endoscopic procedures may contaminate the external surface.
• The control head contains the angulation control handles that allow the operator to manipulate the distal end of the instrument and the suction and air/water valves. Unlike non-video endoscopes, video endoscopes do not have eyepieces — instead images are seen directly on the video screen.
• The insertion tube physically enters the patient’s body and can be grossly contaminated during the procedure. The distal end of the tube houses the microchip. The section of the insertion tube adjacent to the distal end is known as the bending section. Note: The outer covering is made from soft flexible material and can be easily damaged.
